Individual bike tour - 7 days/6 nights - distances as you like
South Tyrol – upon hearing this magic word you will picture the magnificent peaks of the Dolomites and other natural beauties, excellent wine and the local custom of “Torggelen” – tasting home made bacon, sweet chestnuts and red wine. This cycle tour offers insight into famous cities as Bolzano, Merano and Trient, the birth house of the local hero Andreas Hofer, the castle of extreme climber Reinhold Messner and leads through lovely apple orchards and vineyards. To discover South Tyrol always also means to experience new pleasures for the palate. Based on a change of hotels only once, this tour is probably the most comfortable way to enjoy South Tyrol by bicycle.
Many cycle paths and minor roads lead through orchards and vineyards. Short connecting cycles on roads with traffic. Mostly flat or downhill with a few climbs. Almost all excursions offer possibilities of extending or shortcutting the proposed routes.
Parking/Arrival and Departure
Unguarded public car park near the hotel.
Railway: Exit at station Merano, a short distance from your hotel. From Kaltern a transfer service is available to the stations Auer or Bolzano.
By car: Take the motorway to Bolzano and then the expressway to Merano. Kaltern is very well connected to the motorway. In order to have your car available at the 2nd hotel, we offer free transfer service from Kaltern to the hotel in Merano on the evening of hotel change.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Individual arrival at Merano
Individual arrival at Merano. Handing out of detailed travel documentation and rental bicycles by hotel-staff.
Day 2:
Vinschgau approx. 30-60 km
Use the newly opened Vinschgau-train to travel up into Vinschgau. Start as you like between Merano and Mals. Cycle along the gushing waters of river Etsch, see castles and fortresses as well as large orchards. Visit mighty fortress Churburg, Juvenal – Reinhold Messner’s residence or the curiosity cabinet of Uncle Taus.
Day 3:
Passeiertal valley/Merano approx. 45 km
Cycle tour into the valley Passeiertal to house Sandwirt (birthouse of local rebel during the French wars, Andreas Hofer). Return to Merano. Maybe you like to stroll under the arcades or take a walk on famous Tappeiner path.
Day 4: Überetsch/Upper Etsch approx. 45 km
Cycle through the countryside of Überetsch (Upper Etsch) from Merano to well known wine-grower village Kaltern. Many orchards seam this part of the “South Tyrolean Wine-Street”. Via Eppan and St. Pauls („cathedral in the countryside“) you cycle to Lake Kalterer See and to Auer.
Day 5: Trento approx. 50 km
Along the Etsch-Cycle Path southwards via Salurn from South Tyrol into Trentino to the capital Trento. Historic interesting old town with cathedral, many Palazzi, Castello del Buonconsiglio and of course little cafés inviting to have an original Italian cappuccino. Return by train to Auer. Cycle a few km back to the hotel.
Day 6: Lakes Montiggler Seen and Bolzano approx. 30-55 km
Cycle around Lake Kalterer See and to the lakes Montiggler Seen (beautiful circular road). Feel free to extend the tour to Bolzano (“Ötzi-museum). Along the river Etsch to Auer (rail transfer possible) and back to the hotel.

Merano
Near the centre at the Passer-Promenade, yet very quiet, you live during the first half of the tour in a 3*** residence, offering the comfort of 4****. Relax at the southern garden pool or in the hot-whirlpool with panorama view.
Kaltern/Auer
Depending on availability of rooms we book the second hotel in the region between Kaltern and Auer on Lake Kalterer See. An old winery converted into a comfortable guesthouse is on our list as well as a family run hotel in sunny and quiet situation on a forest. A few meters above Kaltern with fantastic view on the Lake. Or we can get a room in a charming, comfortable Art Nouveau Villa.
